Description

       Antirobe (clindamycin) is used in the treatment of soft tissue infections, dental infections and bone infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.  It is available as 25mg, 75mg and 150mg capsules and as drops containing 24mg/1ml.  The drops should be stored at room temperature.  The usual dose in dogs is 2.5-5mg/pound by mouth every 12 hours.  The usual dose in cats is 5-10mg/pound by mouth once a day.  (Sold per capsule.)

What is this Medication used for?

        Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms.  It is most often used to treat deep wounds, bone infections, abscesses and infections of the mouth.

What are the side effects?

        The side effects of clindamycin may include vomiting and diarrhea.

What special Precautions are there?

        This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or lincomycin.  Use with caution when given with neuromuscular blocking agents (usually administered pre-op).  Clindamycin may be given with or without food.  Nursing puppies or kittens may develop diarrhea since the medication passes in the milk.  Periodic liver and kidney tests should be performed if the pet is on this medication for more than one month.

In the event of an overdose.

        Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.  Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

How should I store this medication?

        Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed.  Store at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture.  Do not store in the bathroom.  Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.  Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
