Description

        Metronidazole is used by veterinarians to treat various conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, nonspecific diarrhea disorders, susceptible bacterial infections, infections caused by Giardia and periodontal disease.  It is available as 250mg and 500mg tablets.  The usual dose in dogs is 3-23mg/pound by mouth 1 to 4 times a day.  The usual dose for cats is 5-23mg/pound by mouth 1 to 2 times a day.  Duration of therapy depends on the type of condition and response to treatment.  (Sold per tablet.)

What is this Medication used for?

        Metronidazole is an antimicrobial used in the treatment of Giardia infections, inflammatory bowel disease and infections in the mouth.

What are the side effects?

        Side effects of metronidazole may include nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, rash and incoordination.  This medication may discolor the urine reddish-brown.

What special Precautions are there?

        This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it.  Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals.  Use with caution in animals with liver disease or blood disorders.  Use with caution when given with phenytoin or anticoagulants such as warfarin.  Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking.  Give this medication with food.

In the event of an overdose.

        Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.  Symptoms of overdose may include loss of appetite, vomiting, disorientation and seizures.

How should I store this medication?

        Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed.  Store at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture.  Do not store in the bathroom.  Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.  Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
