Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital offers state-of-the-art surgery services. Not only do our doctors stay abreast of all the latest techniques, but they also ensure that all of the equipment is the latest and greatest! Our newest addition has been our laser. Laser surgery allows the doctor greater control of the incision, the ability to ensure that all possible malignant cells are removed with tumors, and it also decreases bleeding and pain for our patients. To illustrate a typical surgery we have decided to let Pixie tell everyone about her spay at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital: My Big Day - By: Pixie "Today was a very special day for me. I had an ovariohisterectomy, or 'spay' surgery, performed by Dr. Hall. This will help protect me from getting ovarian, uterine, and breast cancer as well as other bad things when I get older. My day started early when Dr. Hall and his technician made sure I was OK to have surgery. They looked me over very carefully. Next, a technician came and gave me some medicine to help ease the stress and make sure that I wasn't in any pain when she put a tiny needle in my arm called a catheter.
The catheter was hooked up to a machine called an infusion pump. She was very gentle, and I didn't even know what she was doing until it was over! They gave me something that made me fell sorta sleepy. They were all very nice and kept telling me how good I was being. Dr. Hall came and told me that I was going to get very sleepy and that when I woke up, the surgery would be over. He told me that a technician would watch me during the surgery, and computers would check my heart rate and rhythm (with an EKG machine), the oxygen levels in my blood, and how strong my pulse was (with a pulse oximeter), and make sure I was breathing OK. He said I would have a breathing tube in my mouth for oxygen and anesthetic gas (I think he said it was isoflurane) and that it might make my throat a little hoarse when I woke up. He also gave me fluids so I wouldn't be thirsty when I woke up. He said I would even have my nails done while I was asleep! He gave me an anesthetic in the catheter, and I slowly went to sleep.
It seemed like only a few minutes, but when I woke up, it was afternoon! I had a little bandage on and, boy, was I hungry. The technician came in and asked if I was OK and wanted a snack. You bet I did! I hadn't eaten since the night before. She also gave me something for any pain I might be having, though I felt really good! Dr. Hall came in a little later to check on me, and told me that the technician had called my family earlier and that they said they loved and missed me. He even said that I could go home that night - if I promised to be good! So that was my big day. Everyone at Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital was so nice to me and made me feel special. They said I was a 'Horseshoe Lake Super Star' and was welcome anytime!" |
